EXETER >> An aggressive-driving detail conducted Wednesday morning by Exeter Township police on Route 422 netted 43 citations, including one driver who was clocked at 109 mph in a 55-mph zone, police said.

The PennDOT-funded detail was conducted from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. as part of a national crackdown on aggressivedriving behaviors such as running red lights, tailgating, failing to move over for emergency vehicles and heavy truck violations, officials said.

Most of the citations were given in the stretch of Route 422, also known as the West Shore Bypass, between the Mount Penn interchange and the merge with Perkiomen Avenue.

A total of 31 speeding tickets were issued, several for speeds in excess of 80 mph. One driver got his second speeding ticket of the day; he was stopped earlier that morning by Northern Berks Regional police.

A truck driver was cited for an overweight vehicle, and two truck drivers who were pulled over for aggressive driving had their rigs put out of service for equipment issues.

Eight trucks were inspected during the detail.

“We thank our motorists for driving at a safe speed and moving over when there are emergency vehicles on the side of the road,” Exeter police said in a posting on the department’s Facebook page Wednesday night. “We are enforcing speed limits to reduce the instances of crashes, to keep our friends and neighbors safe, and to maintain a visual presence on the street.”
