NORRISTOWN >> The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office welcomed several new deputies and saw the promotion of one deputy to corporal during ceremonies held at the county courthouse.

Deputy Timothy Metz, a graduate of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, was promoted to corporal on Monday as his family looked on with pride. Metz was selected from a list of 15 applicants for the promotion.

“Whenever you see him he is smiling and he always has a positive attitude. He became a (deputy) in 2010 and has worked in every division in our office and is certified in tactical entry and active shooter response,” said county Sheriff Sean P. Kilkenny, describing Metz’s qualifications.

“Throughout his time in office, Deputy Metz has demonstrated excellent leadership, teamwork, dependability and problem solving. His file contains a dozen letters from police chiefs, judges and commanding staff for his work in assisting the bomb squad and K9 units,” Kilkenny added. “His original application to the sheriff’s office notes that he joined to give back to the community and that truly says everything about Corporal Tim Metz.”

Metz thanked his family, “especially mom and dad raising me to be the man I am today,” and his co-workers for all their support.

Colleen McCrane, a graduate of Archbishop Ryan High School who received a bachelor’s degree in special education and English from Temple University, took the oath of office to become a deputy sheriff.

“She also studied marine biology at Stockton College. So, clearly, we’re looking for more marine biologists here at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office,” Kilkenny said lightheartedly, as spectators that included McCrane’s family smiled.

Also taking the oath as a new deputy was Christian White, a graduate of The Shipley School who earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology from West Virginia University.

“After graduating, Christian returned to The Shipley School as a strength and conditioning coach as well as a lacrosse coach. He has worked as a bartender and a bouncer at several area establishments so we know if something gets out of hand in the courts we know who we can go to as a go-to person,” said Kilkenny, eliciting laughter from White’s family and friends.

Finally, Bryce McMichael, a graduate of Souderton High School who earned a degree in sociology and criminal justice from East Stroudsburg University, took the oath of office to become a deputy.

“Everybody knows that the Philadelphia Phillies have the second most important Bryce in the Delaware Valley. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office clearly has the best,” Kilkenny joked before administering the oath of office to McMichael.

The sheriff’s office is charged with custody of all prisoners not on bail. Sheriff’s deputies deliver offenders to the institutions to which they have been sentenced and provide security in the courts. The sheriff’s department, which has about 150 employees, also carries out orders of the courts in civil and criminal cases and processes all applications for permits to carry concealed weapons.
