Good news on climate control

- —Lee Hallman, Gilbertsville

As I consider this concern about climate control, the main topic in the most recent debate among the Democratic presidential candidates, I have good news for all Americans. The climate is in good hands!

The founders of this great nation referenced that in their document bringing our nation into existence. They made the point that this is God’s earth, and His laws govern nature. Remember what they said: “The Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle them.” Does that not tell us that our nation was founded on the assurance that God controls nature? They went on to say that it is the Creator who gives us our right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” God our Creator controls the climate!

We all agree that man must be good custodians of God’s earth, but never will God relinquish total control. In the creation account, God gave man managerial responsibility with these words in Genesis 1:26: “Let us make men in our own image, and let them have dominion over all the earth.” If His managers of earth fail, God will step in as He sees fit.

God has demonstrated His control of nature to determine the fate of nations to bring favor to His followers. I repeat: to those who trust Him! That was true in our nation’s beginning! God exercised climate control on our behalf as He mentions in Job 38:22: “Hast thou entered into the treasures of snow? Or hast thou seen the treasures of hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?” I am so glad our founders relied on Divine Providence as they said they would. We must take care, but to say man can destroy God’s earth is a stretch; only God can do that.

God showed climate control in our War for Independence with the ice in Boston Harbor to aid the Colonial Army in a great victory. The fog in New York allowed General Washington to escape from the British General Howe when he thought he had Washington trapped. God assisted the colonists in Boston when in the 1740’s He sent a storm to prevent an invading French fleet from taking over the Boston Harbor. In the early 1600’s, God used a storm to take the Puritans to the Plymouth Colony rather than Viriginia where hostile Indians were awaiting to prevent their establishing a colony there.

Yes, God steps in at His pleasure, and will continue to do so when He sees man is on the wrong track. The people in Noah’s day found that out when God sent a great flood to stymie the rampant evil and give man the opportunity to start over and try again.

Instead of spending trillions of dollars trying to control the climate, maybe our nation should focus on behavior control and restore public morality to conform to God’s laws of behavior. How about training our youth with some of God’s commandments? “Love the neighbor as thyself” is a good one to instill in young minds. “Thou shalt not kill” would save the lives of thousands of babies in the womb. “Flee fornication” would likely reduce the unwanted pregnancies. “Let your moderation be known,” seems more realistic than elimination to reduce the damage caused by excesses.

The Ten Commandments in the Supreme Court building that used to be read in public schools may help. In those days when we practiced our national motto, these problems were not quite as serious as they are today. I like “In God We Trust.”
