Say no to local police use of radar

- —Tom McCarey, National Motorists Association

There is a crisis of misinformation about actual, and safe, driver behavior. There is no crisis of “speeding.”

In an effort to profit from speed enforcement, which is a billion dollar racket, the RADAR lobby relies on urban legend, half-truths and outright lies, and pushes the Legislature to authorize RADAR for municipal police.

Starting with unsafe posted speeds, the RADAR lobby then points in horror to all the “speeders.”

These “speeders” are only “speeders” because the speed limits are posted below the safest speeds that 85% of drivers travel all the time.

The “speeding” argument is manufactured by the RADAR lobby. Who are these people? They profit financially from aggressive speed enforcement of too-low limits made easier with RADAR.

Honest highway safety, using best highway safety engineering practices developed over 70 years, dictates that limits be set at the speeds the super-majority of drivers travel: the 85th Percentile Speeds. When limits are properly set there is no need for aggressive speed enforcement, therefore no need for RADAR.

Follow the money. Ask your township supervisors why speed limits are posted below the safest speeds. They have a financial interest in posting and enforcing low limits.

The police ask for RADAR because of the continuous pressure from mis-informed citizens and township supervisors complaining constantly about all those “speeders.”

There is a crisis of misinformation about actual, and safe, driver behavior. There is no crisis of “speeding.” Manufacturing “speeders” and the money to be made are at the bottom of the push for RADAR.

Tell your Representative to vote NO on Senate Bill 607, RADAR for municipal police, or we will have sped traps everywhere.
