OJR grad Willis scoring big for IUP

When the Indiana (Pa.) women’s soccer team needs a big goal, the Crimson Hawks turn to sophomore Mahogany Willis.

Willis, from Pottstown and an Owen J. Roberts graduate, has scored 15 goals with four assists for 34 points and has six game winners. The game-winners are tied for second, the goals tied for 10th and the points tied for 15th in NCAA Division II. As a freshman, she had 14 goals and one assist for 29 points with five game winners.

On Oct. 28, Willis earned her third PSAC Offensive Player of the Week award of the season after she scored both goals in a 2-1 triumph over league-leading Slippery Rock on Oct. 26 in Indiana.

“We are really pleased with how Mahogany’s season has gone so far,” coach Adel Heder said. “She has a great attacking mentality and likes to take players on one-on-one situations.

The coach said that Willis worked really hard to improve her shot with both feet and it has paid off.

“It’s been a pleasure having her these past two seasons,” he said. “I hope to see many more goals from Mahogany in the future.”

Indiana is 10-6 overall and 8-6 in PSAC play after a 4-0 league victory over Seton Hill last Saturday in Greensburg. Willis had the first goal and an assist in the game. STEPHEN STURM (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The 6-foot3, 195-pound junior quarterbac­k became the fifth Bentley player to eclipse 5,000 yards in total offense for the 4-4 Falcons’ football team after a big effort in a 41-35 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Anselm in a home game last Saturday in Waltham, Mass. Sturm connected on 24 of 33 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns in the game. On the season, he has completed 164 out of 270 passes (60.7 percent) for 1,871 yards with 13 touchdowns. He has also carried the ball 69 times for 254 yards and a touchdown. BRYTON HENRY (BOYERTOWN) >> The Eastern senior finished fifth out of 151 runners at the Middle Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championsh­ips last Saturday in Frederick, Md. He covered the 8,000 meter course in a personal best time of 25:42.3 to help the Eagles finish sixth out of 16 teams. It was Henry’s fourth trip to the league championsh­ip. He finished 11th as a freshman (27:20.5), 28th as a sophomore (28:03.3) and 19th as a junior (27:36.3). KATELYN BERNOTAS (OWEN J. ROBERTS) >> The junior led the Bernotas sisters and the Eastern women’s cross country team finished fifth at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championsh­ips last Saturday in Frederick, Md. She finished seventh out of 143 runners with a time of 22:28.4. Senior Megan Bernotas finished 11th with a time of 22:46.6 while sophomore Mary Bernotas was 12th with a time of 23:03.5. Katelyn earned All-MAC first team honors while Megan and Mary were named to the second team. JACKIE LERRO (POPE JOHN PAUL II) >> The No. 19 Lynchburg field hockey team finished the regular season with a 16-3 overall record and an 8-0 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the 5-foot junior forward was the big scorer on the team. Lerro had 18 goals and 13 assists for 49 points with three game winners. The assists are tied for sixth in NCAA Division II. She’s had four goals and an assist in two games – a 7-1 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan and in a 6-1 triumph over Stevenson. ADAM SHARKEY (SPRINGFORD) >> The 5-foot-10, 180-pound sophomore is seeing action in the defensive backfield for the Stevenson football team, the Mustangs 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference after a 4213 league victory over Lebanon Valley last Saturday in Lebanon. Sharkey has 15 tackles including a sack for 10 yards. He scored his first college career touchdown when he returned an intercepti­on for 36 yards in a 55-7 league victory in a home game over Albright on Oct. 19 in Owings Mills, Md. BRANDON OTT (OWEN J. ROBERTS) >> The 6-foot junior defender has started all 14 games for the St. Francis men’s soccer team. He has a goal and two assists and scored his goal in a 2-1 non-league victory over Duquesne on the home field in Loretto. Ott has helped the Red Flash hold foes to 17 goals (1.20 goals against average) with four shutouts. The latest came in a 1-0 Northeast Conference victory over Mount St. Mary’s last Friday in Emmitsburg, Md. to lift the team to 9-5 overall and in second place

in the league with a 6-2 record.

JORDAN SHEMONSKI (POPE JOHN PAUL II) >> The 5-foot-8 sophomore outside hitter/ opposite has played in all 26 matches with five starts and 88 sets for the Cabrini women’s volleyball team. She has 91 kills, 45 digs and 22.0 total blocks. The Cavaliers are 13-13 overall and 4-2 in the American East Conference after a 3-0 non-league loss to Rowan last Saturday in Glassboro, N.J. Shemonski played in 32 matches and 55 sets as a freshman and had 36 kills and 10 total blocks. JOSH DUBOST (METHACTON) >> The 6-foot-2, 180-pound sophomore has started all 17 games on defense for the High Point men’s soccer team, the Panthers 11-6 overall and 6-1 in the Big South Conference after suffering their first league loss, 2-1 to Campbell last Saturday in High Point, N.C. Dubost has helped the defense limit foes to 18 goals (1.05 goals against average) with seven shutouts. One of those came in a 1-0 nonleague victory over Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Oct. 22 in Durham, N.C. GABRIELLE HEGEDUS (SPRING-FORD) >> The 5-foot-5 defensive specialist had a solid first season with the Sarah Lawrence (N.Y.) women’s volleyball team, the Gryphons finishing 1316 overall and 5-6 in the Skyline Conference after a 3-1 league loss to Farmingdal­e State last Friday in Farmingdal­e, N.Y. She saw action in 25 matches with 21 starts and was on the court for 83 sets, Hegedus finished second on the team with 44 service aces. She also had 130 digs and 63 kills. TJ TORNETTA (METHACTON) >> The 6-foot-3, 200-pound red-shirt senior wide receiver scored his first collegiate touchdown for the Bloomsburg football team on a 46-yard pass play in the second quarter in a 5427 PSAC East victory over Lock Haven on Oct. 26 in Bloomsburg. Tornetta has caught four passes for 64 yards (16.0) this season. The Huskies are 4-5 overall and 3-3 in league play after a 26-21 league triumph over Millersvil­le last Saturday in Millersvil­le.
