WEST CHESTER >> Residents looking for a job or additional work can apply for temporary employment with the 2020 Census.

The U.S. Census Bureau is currently looking to fill hundreds of thousands of temporary positions to assist with the 2020 count and the pay rate for the census taker in Chester County is $27.50 per hour — the highest rate in the commonwealth.

“If you’re looking for temporary employment, a side job, or just want to earn some additional income and gain experience, you may want to consider a position with the U.S. Census Bureau,” state Sen. Andrew Dinniman said. “Some of the positions, such as the census taker, also offer flexible hours.”

There is a variety of temporary positions currently available with the U.S. Census, some of which are listed here:

• Census Taker – interviewing household residents and update address lists. They utilize electronic devices to collect census data.

• Census Field Supervisor – monitoring the progress and performance of census takers and ensure work is completed on time.

• Recruiting Assistant – recruiting assistants promote job openings and meet with various community representatives and media outlets to recruit local residents to work with the census.

Reimbursements for workrelated mileage and expenses are also offered.

Hiring and recruiting for census takers will continue through the month of January. Next, selected candidates will begin paid training and preparation, which will run roughly from March to July. This summer, census takers will help collect responses from households that have not yet responded to the census.

Nationally, the census can determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as drawing congressional and state legislative districts. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.

The 2010 census led to a series of changes in local government, including school board apportionments across the county. For more information on the jobs available with the U.S. Census Bureau, visit https://2020census.gov/en/ jobs/job-details.html.
