Kelly passes 1,000 points at Lock Haven

Phoenixvil­le grad named PSAC East Player of the Week after becoming 21st in Bald Eagles history to reach milestone

Christian Kelly was named PSAC East Player of the Week on Feb. 10 after becoming the 21st player in Lock Haven men’s basketball history to score 1,000 points in career. And, the 6-foot4, 210-pound senior guard didn’t rest on his laurels.

Kelly, from Phoenixvil­le and a Phoenixvil­le Area graduate, led the Bald Eagles to a big 104103 double overtime victory over No. 24 Shippensbu­rg in a league game last Saturday in Shippensbu­rg.

He had 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots in the game. His basket tied the game at 91 to send it into the second overtime. He had five points in the final overtime.

Kelly reached the milestone by scoring 26 points in a 91-74 league victory over Kutztown on Feb. 8 in Lock Haven. He also had 10 rebounds in the game.

“I am very happy and proud of Christian and all the hard work that he has put in not only on the court but also the classroom,” coach Mike Nestor said. “Being able to reach the 1,000 point career mark is a great and well-deserved accomplish­ment.”

Kelly leads the Bald Eagles in scoring with a 20.1 average aided by 44 3-pointers. He’s tied for first in rebounding with 7.7 a game, has 47 assists, 24 steals and a team-high 39 blocked shots. He’s scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games and has six double doubles.

Lock Haven is 11-11 overall and 8-10 in league play after the victory over Shippensbu­rg. KATIE ARMSTRONG (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The 6-foot-2 red-shirt

senior forward has been on a roll with the Fairfield women’s basketball team, the Stags 12-10 overall and 9-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference after 59-52 league loss to Iona last Saturday. Armstrong had 13 points and nine rebounds in the game. Prior to that contest, she scored 24, 22 and 22 points and hit 13 of 22 shots from outside the arc (59 percent) to help Fairfield go 2-2, all in league play. On the season, Armstrong is averaging 14.0 points and 7.3 rebounds a game with 31 assists, 26 steals and 19 blocked shots. TOMMY KILLORAN (BOYERTOWN) >> The red-shirt junior has seen limited action for the Kutztown wrestling team this season, but he came up big for the 17-ranked Golden Bears in a 26-16 PSAC victory over Shippensbu­rg on Feb. 12 in Kutztown. Competing in the final match of the night at 285 pounds, Killoran was trailing 4-2 but posted a pin at the 5:40 mark to give the team a 26-16 victory. It was the first dual match victory for Killoran who has a 7-0 overall record, mainly in open tournament­s.

DEVIN RAWLEY (SPRINGFORD) >> The freshman finished third out of 47 entrants in the long jump for the College of Charleston women’s track team at the South Carolina Invitation­al on Feb. 8 in Columbia,

S.C. She posted a season-best 18 foot, 2 ¼ inch effort, the third best performanc­e in school history. Rawley also competes in the 60 meter dash for the Cougars. She was fifth out of 52 at the Roanoke Invitation­al on Feb. 1 in Salem, Va. She finished in 8.03. She had a 7.98 in the semifinals, the fifth best time in the school record book.

JIMMY FRATANTONI (OWEN J. ROBERTS) >> The senior finished third in the 184 pound class to help the Muhlenberg wrestling team finish second in the Centennial Conference Championsh­ip last Saturday in Allentown. Competing in the toughest weight class in the tourney, Fratantoni dropped his opening round match 3-0 but came back to post an 18-2 technical fall in the consolatio­n round and then won the consolatio­n final 8-1 thanks to a late takedown and a near-fall. The technical fall extended his school record. He now has 21 in his career.

TEAGAN SCHEIN-BECKER (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The sophomore finished first out of 59 entrants in the 3,000 meter run at the Albany Winter Classic on Feb. 5 at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Her time was a personal best 9:57.89. Schein-Becker finished fifth in the mile at the NYC Gotham Cup on Jan. 17 also in Staten Island with a time of 5:08.41. She was the second collegiate finisher. Schein-Becker and the Broncs head to The Armory in New York City for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championsh­ip this weekend.

SCOTT HONICKER (OWEN J. ROBERTS) >> The freshman is the top man in the 60 meter hurdles for the Rhode Island men’s indoor track team. Honicker finished second with a personal best time of 8.40 in the URI Coaches Tribute Invitation­al on Feb. 7 in Kingston, R.I. He was fifth in the prelims with an 8.60 clocking, but his big effort in the finals earned him a spot on the New England Indoor Championsh­ips. Honicker also competes in the 200 and 300 meter dashes for the Rams during the indoor season.

MADDIE HANEY (SPRING FORD) >> The 13-11 Jefferson women’s basketball team has a five-game winning streak and the 5-foot-11 sophomore gave the Rams a jump-start by a doubledoub­le (14 points and 12 rebounds) in a 67-59 victory over Caldwell on Feb. 1. She had 10 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-71 victory over Wilmington (DE) on Feb. 12. Haney is averaging 7.3 points a game and has hit 19 of 44 3-point attempts (43.2 percent). She’s averaging 5.6 rebounds a game with 33 assists and 17 steals.

MIKE CIANCIULLI (POPE JOHN PAUL II) >> The 6-16 Delaware Valley men’s basketball team has dropped three straight games, but the 6-foot senior guard has had big efforts in all three of them. He had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 69-62 loss to Eastern on Feb. 8, 20 points and four assists in a 77-70 overtime setback to King’s on Feb. 12 and 17 points and 12 rebounds in an 83-71 loss to FDU-Florham last Saturday. He’s averaging 14.1 points a game. Sophomore Nester Diaz (Spring-Ford) is seeing action off the bench for the Aggies.

COLE PETERLIN (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) >> The freshman is the top high jumper on the Liberty men’s indoor track team. He finished 12th, the second freshman finisher, at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite last weekend in Lynchburg, Va., with a height of 6 feet, 1 ½ inches. Peterlin finished third at the South Carolina Open on Feb. 8 with a 6 foot, 4 inch effort, was second at the Liberty Flames Invite on Feb. 1 with a height of 6 feet, 2 inches and had his best effort when he was 11th with a 6 foot, 4 ¾ inch height at the Virginia Tech Invitation­al on Jan. 18. MITCHELL CAIRNS (UPPER PERKIOMEN) >> The senior is hoping to wrap up his career with the Lafayette men’s swim with a good showing at the Patriot League Championsh­ip starting Wednesday in Annapolis, Md. Cairns and the Leopards competed in the Navy Invitation­al as a final tune-up for the championsh­ip on Feb. 1 in Annapolis. Cairns posted his best times of the season, finishing 14th in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.68 and was 24th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.18.
