Local seniors put final touches on college careers

Maddie Sager has wrapped up her standout career with the Seton Hall women’s golf team.

The senior from Phoenixvil­le and an Owen J. Roberts graduate opened the spring season by finishing tied for 19th out of 81 golfers at the Florida Atlantic Winter Warm-up on Feb. 10-11 in Boca Raton with a 225 total on rounds of 70, 79 and 76. She finished tied for 32nd at the North Florida Invitation­al to wrap up the season and her career with rounds of 76, 79 and 76 for a 231 total.

Sager was gearing up her game for the Big East Conference Championsh­ip April 24-26 in Okatie, S.C. but that tourney was cancelled. She finished tied for fourth at last year’s Big East

tourney with a 228 on rounds of 80, 75 and 73.

“In my time with Maddie (three years), she has not only excelled on the golf course, but in the classroom and as part of the Seton Hall community,” coach Natalie Desjardins said. “Each year she arrived better prepared with specific goals in mind. She was a team leader on the golf course and she continued to excel while making sure her teammates were having fun.”

Sager competed in 37 tournament­s in her career with the Pirates and posted two first place finishes. She tied for first in the Brown Bear Invitation­al (70-71— 141) in the fall of 2017 and tied for first at the Nittany Lion Invitation­al (60-70-75—214) last fall. She had a career-best round of

69 four times and posted rounds of 70 eight times.

JUSTIN SCHWENK (SPRING-FORD)

» The 6-foot, 185-pound senior played in all six games for the 4-2 Virginia men’s lacrosse team. He had nine ground balls, won 18 of 36 faceoffs (.500) and

picked up an assist. Schwenk played in 39 games in his three years with the Cavaliers and finished with 138 ground balls and won 340 out of 593 faceoffs (.573). He also had two goals and four assists. He spent his freshman year at Monmouth where he was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference second team and was a member of the league’s AllRookie squad.

BRIANNA CIRINO (SPRING-FORD) » The senior defender played in 50 games with 43 starts in her career with the Rutgers (N.J.) women’s lacrosse team. This season, she helped the Scarlet Knights post a 5-4 record. She started all nine games and had 16 ground balls, four caused turnovers and a draw control. In her career, Cirino finished with 58 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers and 26 draw controls. She was a two-time AllBig Ten Academic selection. MATT DELLACROCE (SPRING-FORD) » The 6-foot, 200-pound senior played defense and was used on faceoffs for the Michigan men’s lacrosse team, the Wolverines finishing 4-3 on the season. Dellacroce had 13 ground balls and won 23 of 42 faceoffs (.548). He scored a goal, had nine ground balls and won 9-of-12 faceoffs in a 16-8 victory over Canisius on Feb. 18. He missed most last year with an injury. In 19 career games he had 39 ground balls and won 63of-129 faceoffs (.488). REGAN MCCOMB (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » After three seasons serving mainly as a backup, the senior finally got a chance to start in goal for the Coastal Carolina (S.C.) women’s lacrosse team this season, which lasted just five games. She was 2-3 with 55 saves this season. She had a career-high 17 saves in her final game with the Chanticlee­rs in a 13-6 loss to Denver on March 11. McComb finished her career playing in 19 games and giving up 96 goals with 83 saves.

RYAN MARKEY (SPRING-FORD) » The grad student wrapped up his career with the St. John’s (N.Y.) baseball team. He played in 97 games, hitting .254 (65-for-256) with 16 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 44 runs batted in. He had a big season as a redshirt junior. He hit .291 (50-for172) with 13 doubles, two triples, a home run, 24 runs scored and 36 runs batted in. In 13 games for the 4-9 Red Storm this season, Markey hit .180 (9-for-50) with three doubles, a home run, three runs batted in and nine runs scored.

MADISON DAVIS (POTTSGROVE) »

The 5-foot-5 senior attack started all seven games and had nine goals and 15 assists for the Marymount (Va.) women’s lacrosse team, the Saints finishing with a 7-0 record. She also had seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Davis had a breakout season as a junior when she started all 21 games and scored 52 points on 24 goals and 28 assists. The assists are ranked fourth in team history. She also had 20 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and two draw controls.

LIAM HARE (SPRING-FORD) » The 6-foot, 195-pound senior midfielder scored four goals with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers for the 5-2 St. Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team. He had two goals in an 11-8 victory over Delaware on Feb. 18 and a goal in the final game of his career in a 13-12 loss to Penn on March 8. Hare played in 43 games with 10 starts and finished with 11 goals on just 17 shots on goal and seven assists for 17 points. He also had 64 ground balls and 36 caused turnovers.

DAI PEARSON (POTTSTOWN) » The 5-foot-2 senior attack had three goals for the Chestnut Hill women’s lacrosse team, the Griffins finishing 0-4. Pearson had two of her goals in the season-opening 11-9 loss to Shepherd on Feb. 22. Her other goal came in an 18-6 loss to Frostburg State on Feb. 29. She finished her career having played in 41 games and had 45 goals and 10 assists for 55 points with two game winners. She also finished with 27 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.

LAUREN HUGHES (METHACTON) » The 5-foot-4 senior attack had four goals and two assists for the Cabrini women’s lacrosse team, the Cavaliers finishing 2-1. She had two goals in an 18-13 seasonopen­ing victory over Albright on Feb. 18 and two goals in a 12-5 triumph over Ursinus on Feb. 20. Hughes had a standout career. In 65 games, she scored 69 goals with 41 assists for 110 points. She scored three goals four times in her career and had four assists twice. Hughes also had 67 ground balls, seven draw controls and 16 caused turnovers.

ALYSSA LONG (UPPER PERKIOMEN) » The 5-foot-8 senior midfielder started all six games for the Goucher (Md.) women’s lacrosse team, the Gophers finishing 4-2. She had seven goals and two assists for nine points along with eight ground balls, 16 draw controls and three caused turnovers. She had two goals in a 11-10 loss to Alvernia on Feb. 24 and two goals in a 12-10 loss to Gwynedd Mercy on Feb. 29. In 52 games, Long scored 61 goals and had 22 assists for 83 points. She also had 66 ground balls, 110 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers.
