Peaceful protest is fine, but don’t disrespect flag

Every time there is social injustice, racial prejudice or police brutality, our American flag becomes the object of disrespect.

Our flag does not represent any of those situations. It stands for the Declaratio­n of Independen­ce, the Constituti­on, the Bill of Rights and the rule of law.

Even our Founding Fathers who authored and signed these documents couldn’t live up to what they wrote. Many were slaveholde­rs.

That doesn’t quite measure up to what was written in the Declaratio­n of

Independen­ce: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienabl­e rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Our flag represents these goals that we should strive to achieve.

Peacefully protest the prejudices and wrongdoing that occur in our society, work for unity and equality under the law and voice concerns about problems that we have in trying to live united. Stand up for what is right and remember the many men and women who have given their lives for our country. Our flag represents what they died for and all the good in our society.

The Greatest Generation would be appalled to see how some treat our flag after all they went through to preserve it and our country.

Protest peacefully where needed but don’t disrespect our flag.It stands for all that is good in the United States, not the evil.
