Pet adoption fees reduced
The Bissell Pet Foundation will be reducing adoption fees at more than 160 shelters in 32 states between Friday and Sunday as part of the Empty the Shelters initiative. The Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Cumru Township is among them. The only other shelter in Pennsylvania that is part of the reduced adoption fee event is Morris Animal Refuge in Philadelphia.
“More pets run away on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of Bissell Pet Foundation in a statement released Monday. “The increase in shelter intake puts pressure on our partners, who are already working with limited staff and funding due to COVID-19. The best way for us to support them is to help their pets find loving homes.”
All animals included in the Empty the Shelters promotion will be microchipped and spayed/neutered to prevent further pet homelessness. Bissell also will honor foster-to-adopt cases that start as fosters during the upcoming weekend and are finalized up to one week after the event.
The ARL is charging $25 to adopt dogs or kittens and cats age 3 and older can be adopted for free, according to Jennifer Breton, ARL marketing director.
Potential adopters must make an appointment to visit, either online at www. berksarl.org/schedule or by calling the shelter at 610-373-8830.
“Our adoption hours will be the same: Friday 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.,” Breton wrote in an email.
