State park programs canceled
Amid concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19, Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has canceled all public programs, events, and trainings in state parks and forests until further notice.
The order is effective Sunday Dec. 6.
“All in-person programs are canceled until further notice,” the state said on the French Creek State Park website. “This cancellation will impact First Day Hikes. More information will be provided on First Day Hikes. Virtual programs will be offered. Check the calendar of events https://events. dcnr.pa.gov/ for scheduled programs.”
DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said the action was temporary but necessary.
“Throughout the pandemic we have kept our lands open to all so they enjoy outdoor recreation and the positive physical and mental health it provides,” Dunn said in a news release. “That will not change but we must limit social interaction at this time.”
This decision, affecting approximately 150 planned events, will be in effect until further notice. People who have registered for programs will be notified, DCNR said.
State parks and forests will remain open for use by the public.
Since canceling programs in the spring as the pandemic hit state parks had been adding ranger-guided educational programs, limiting participation to 10 or fewer registrants. In Berks County, Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center in Cumru Township and French Creek State Park in Union Township had planned several events for December.
In addition to recurring walks for families and adults, Nolde has canceled an Ugly Sweater hike on Dec. 23, solstice walks and a beauty of botany trek. It also canceled its Last Night Hike and First Day Hike.
French Creek canceled its First Day Hike. First Day Hikes have become a tradition for people to start their year off “on the right foot.”
In a news release, DCNR said staff will be taking additional
steps to offer self-guided programming only or virtual events. Virtual and self-guided alternatives to First Day Hikes will be made available later by DCNR.
