Barry Sankey’s obituary
Barry Irvin Sankey, 66, of Trappe, PA, passed away on December 21, 2020, at Phoenixville Hospital – Tower Health. Born in Pottstown, PA, on July 10, 1954, Barry was the son of the late Herman and Esther (Strom) Sankey, and brother of the late Sandra “Sandy” Sankey.
Barry earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Political Science from Temple University in Philadelphia where he graduated Cum Laude. He served as the sports editor and managing editor of the daily university paper, The Temple News.
Barry was a modern day professional having reported for the Pottstown Mercury, the old Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, The Spring–Ford Reporter, and The Phoenix Reporter & Item. He had over 40 years of expertise in the sports reporting field, which led him to be recognized by Continental Who’s Who for his exceptional work in the field of journalism.
Barry’s passion for local sports of all levels had enabled him to witness and report first-hand the rise of many great talents from youth leagues to professional. To name a few, retired Major League Baseball slugger Mike Piazza and especially Barry’s uncle, the legendary Hall of Fame NBA Referee, Earl “Yogi” Strom.
Barry was very active in the community, showcasing up and coming student athletes. He was also involved in local politics as well as with Spring City American Legion Baseball. Barry was past president of Congregation Mercy and Truth Synagogue and on the board of B’nai Jacob Synagogue in Phoenixville.
Barry is lovingly remembered by his cousins, friends, and colleagues, who will miss deeply.
A graveside service will take place on December 24, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Congregation Mercy and Truth Cemetery, Hanover St., Pottstown, PA 19464.
