Hill, Boone baseball see offenses explode

HILL SCHOOL 12, PENNINGTON PREP 2 » Gilbert Saunders was a two-way star for the Blues Saturday, pitching and hitting them to victory over the Red Raiders in their non-league pairing.

Saunders went 4-for-4 at the plate, collecting a pair of doubles and scoring three times while driving in a pair of runs. The Hill junior also pitched four scoreless innings, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out five.

Brandon Bastian pitched three frames in relief, yielding just one hit and two unearned runs while fanning another five batters. The senior also contribute­d at the plate, getting one hit and driving in three.

Sophomore outfielder Sam Soderman went 2-4 with three RBI, and thirdbasem­an Grant Deshishku went 1-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

DANIEL BOONE 14, WHITEHALL 6 » The Blazers jumped out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning, then added 10 runs the rest of the way to hold off the Zephyrs in their first game of the season Saturday.

Boone got on the board in the first inning when Mikey Gregos singled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.

Zach Scherzer took the win for the Blazers. The lefty lasted three innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two. Harrison Leister and Brandon Monaco entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Daniel Boone collected 18 hits on the day. Colton Yenser, Zach Scherzer, Mikey Gregos (three RBI) and Dalton Cymbalski each collected three hits to lead the Blazers, with Krystian Hornberger (triple, four RBI) and Nate DeBusi (double) also having multiple-hit outings.
