MANASQUAN, N.J. » Jersey Mike’s Subs and its customers across the country and the region rallied to raise a record $15 million during the fast casual sandwich shop’s annual Month of Giving in March.

This year’s $15 million is more than double the amount raised in 2019 when the company donated $7.3 million to local charities.

Each year in March, Jersey Mike’s Subs raises funds for 200 charities chosen by the stores. The effort culminated on March 31 this year with the company’s Day of Giving — where 100% of sales from the day were donated to charity.

According to the company, this year’s results are even more meaningful, because the Day of Giving events were cancelled last year due to the spreading pandemic.

“We really hoped to do well this year after the disappointment of having to cancel last year’s Day of Giving, and the outpouring of support from across the country is truly inspiring,” Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder & CEO, said in a press release announcing this year’s results. “We are filled with gratitude and admiration for our customers, franchise owners, and team members who have helped these charities in such a big way, now, when they need it more than ever.”

Across the greater-Philadelphia Region, 14 Jersey Mike’s locations and three locations in the Willes-Barre area have joined forces for the past four years to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This year, the 17 locations raised $160,504 for the charity. In 2019, the locations raised just under $78,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

Since Jersey Mike’s Subs Month of Giving began in 2011, the chain has raised more than $47 million for local charities, including hospitals, youth organizations, food banks and more.

“Giving…making a difference in someone’s life” has been the mission of Jersey Mike’s from the beginning.

Cancro, who bought his first sub shop at age 17, credits two local businessmen in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. where he grew up — Jack Baker of Baker’s Lobster Shanty and Bob Hoffman of Hoffman’s Ice Cream — with showing him the importance of giving unconditionally to the community. One of Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving commercials featured Hoffman.

During the month of March leading up to the Day of Giving, Jersey Mike’s collects donations from customers — asking at the register if people would like to donate. In return, the customers receive coupons or free sandwiches, depending on the amount donated.

The 17 area restaurants that have been participating in support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand include locations in Radnor, Horsham, West Chester, Phoenixville, Glen Mills, Blue Bell, Reading, Doylestown, Glen Mills, Quakertown, Feasterville, Allentown, Easton, New Hope, WilkesBarre and Bartonsville. Alex’s Lemonade Stand works to fund research and raise awareness about childhood cancer and support families.
