Chesco sunflower garden draws crowds

EAGLE >> The birds and the bees are oh-so happy, along with us two-legged creatures carrying cameras and sporting broad smiles, when visiting Gunther Sunflower Field.

The acre-sized lot with about 2,000 sunflowers, now at peak bloom, will attract lovers of huge flowers for about two more weeks.

It is the work of 27-year old entrepreneur and author Blake Gunther. Kevin Harrop helped plant, reap and sow the field two months ago.

Abbey Craig and Rich Downey, of Boston, discovered the sunflowers while on a walk, Friday, on a visit for a wedding.

“It’s such a little gem” Craig said. “It’s breathtaking and makes you smile.”

Young sunflowers follow and turn toward the sun, while youngsters like to roam beneath those sunflowers up above their heads.

Gunther is growing the sunflowers for the second year.

“It was so well-loved last year that I definitely wanted to do it again,” Gunther said. “It’s special.

“It takes a little bit of work but it goes a long way.

“It’s wonderful that it can change someone’s day or lighten their mood. Nature is just so beautiful.”

Gunther also penned the book “Creatrix.”

“It concerns the wisdom shared by mothers of success stories in sports, business and culture,” he said about the book available at amazon.

While it’s free to snap photos in the field, Gunther is collecting for The Believe and Achieve Foundation headed by Kate Ryan, sister of star Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. The foundation was founded in 2010 by Blake’s father Fred.

Donations totaled $3,000 last year and go to help at risk youth and underprivileged kids in Chester and Montgomery counties.

Gunther warned that this may be the last year he plants, so get out while you still have a chance.

The field is located in Eagle/Chester Springs, a couple hundred yards west of Route 100. Plenty of parking is available behind Levante Brewing on Park Road.
