UGI donates to scholarship program
The Berks County Community Foundation has received a $22,000 donation.
UGI Energy Services has given the nonprofit organization the money to provide tuition assistance for students living in low-achieving school districts to attend local, private or parochial schools. The gift is part of $200,000 the company is providing to support more than 50 scholarship organizations in Pennsylvania.
The contributions were provided to the schools and scholarship organizations through Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development’s Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit program, which is part of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. UGI Energy Services has provided over $2 million in scholarships through the program since 2014.
“Supporting educational programs and investing in our future leaders is important for UGI Energy Services,” UGI Energy Services President Joe Hartz said in a press release. “From our employees dedicating time to volunteering and tutoring students in reading to providing financial contributions through this program, we are pleased to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.”
Franki Aitken, chief operating officer for the Berks County Community Foundation, said the organization is grateful for the scholarship contribution.
“With this generous support, more Berks County students will be able to pursue a quality education without placing a strain on their families’ resources,” she said.
