Explore East Hampton hike scheduled Aug. 7

EAST HAMPTON >> The Chatham Historical Society’s (CHS) next Explore East Hampton hike will be on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. Hikers will explore the Salmon River State Park & Forest in East Hampton. The hike is sponsored by the East Hampton Parks and Recreation Dept.

Marty Podskoch, a member of the CHS, will lead this enjoyable and educationa­l hike. Hikers will begin at the State Park and walk down Gulf Road. Hikers will follow a “yellowblaz­ed” trail along the lower Salmon River then come back to the State Park and visit the Comstock Covered Bridge. Hikers should have proper footwear. The walk will be on mostly level and some moderately hilly terrain. The hike is recommende­d for children 6 years to adults and will take approx. 1½ hours. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Heavy rain will cancel the hike.

This monthly series of hikes is designed to introduce people to some of the beautiful natural resources in East Hampton. The hikes also foster friendship­s, promote a healthy lifestyle, and help develop an appreciati­on for the value of the open space still prevalent in East Hampton.

Directions to Salmon River State Park: From the Norwich area: take Rt. 2 west, Exit 18. Follow Rt. 16 west for 6.2 miles; turn left into the recreation area. From the New London area: follow Rt. 11 north onto Rt. 2 west, Exit 18. Then follow directions above. From the Middletown area: follow Rt. 66 east to Rt. 16. Then follow Rt. 16 east for 5.5 miles. Turn right into recreation area. From the Hartford area: take Rt. 2 east, Exit 16. Follow Rt. 149 south for 3.2 miles. Turn right onto Rt. 16 west and travel 1.9 miles. Turn left into the recreation area.
