Every dollar counts

“Giving someone there $100 is like giving someone here $10,000. With that $100, they can feed their families for months. They are able to pay for school fees. One hundred dollars changes people’s lives there,” Farid said.

In order for one child to receive an education and lunch for the school year, it costs $65, Wynne said. For the 178 students the Kamran Farid Foundation sponsors, the organization spends $11,570 to send the students to school.

“It is extremely important (to give them an education). That is the only way you can improve their life — by educating them and showing them that they can have a better future,” Farid said.

According to Wynne, $1 is equivalent to 3,300 Ugandan shillings. Each day, Ugandans earn 10,000 shillings — or $3 — after working morning until night, Wynne said. But because of the increasing level of poverty and widespread disease, families are unable to save for their futures.

“There are so many overwhelming problems that people don’t have the ability to save money,” Wynne said.

To ensure the Ndihos’ three daughters received the education they needed in order to have a successful future, the Kamran Farid Foundation sponsored the children’s schooling. “We would always pray together, eat together and talk together. Then one day, they told me they were coming to America,” Wynne said.
