MIDDLETOWN >> A marijuana deal earlier this week led to the arrest of a city man after detectives discovered he was carrying 66 bags of heroin, the majority of which he had hidden in his shoe, police allege.

An officer in an unmarked car surveilling the Main and Ferry streets area on Jan. 10 saw a man approach a number of men and women standing there, and when a man among the group pulled a plastic container out of his pocket, the first person took it and smelled the contents, a report says.

Detectives were watching that area of the North End because it is a high crime area with numerous narcotics-related arrests, police say.

The man, identified as Craig D. Haynes, 57, of Woodbury Circle, returned the container to the other person and the two walked to a vehicle where, police say, the man handed Haynes what appeared to be narcotics. Authorities say Haynes handed over cash to the man, then Haynes got into the passenger side of a car, which drove to Aresco’s Market on Liberty Street. The report says both the female driver and Haynes went inside, exited, then drove to High Street.

The report says Haynes, who was now driving, failed to stop at the intersection, so detectives pulled his car over by Park Place.

Haynes allegedly stepped out of the car and admitted he had 3.7 grams of marijuana in his jacket pocket, which he said he had bought from the man on Main Street. A search turned up 16 bags of heroin in Haynes’ coat, police say, stamped with the word “Dubai.” The report says Haynes told them he “forgot it was there.”

Detectives say he directed them to a 5mg oxycodone pill on the car’s floor, and back at headquarters, he told officers he had 50 bags of heroin in his shoe.

Authorities say the 66 bags of heroin, if sold at $10 a bag, would be worth $660 on the street.

Haynes was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, felony possession with intent to sell, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana and two traffic violations. Haynes was initially held in lieu of $50,000 bail, but after his arraignment Jan. 11, he is being held without bond for a Feb. 3 appearance date.

Police say Haynes has 40 prior arrests with several felony convictions, including those for narcotics and marijuana possession, larceny, several assaults, sexual assault, probation violation, interfering, failure to appear, robbery, burglary, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
