Wesleyan’s Mullen earns 400th win

MIDDLETOWN >> The Wesleyan women’s basketball team rallied from a first half deficit to edge Bates, 62-58, in a NESCAC matchup Saturday at Silloway Gymnasium. It was the 400th career victory for Cardinals head coach Kate Mullen.

Freshman Heidi Scarth poured in a career high 17 points, while junior Maeve Vitale collected eight points and nine rebounds for Wesleyan (6-10, 1-5 NESCAC). Nina Davenport scored a game-high 23 points for Bates (5-12, 2-4 NESCAC).

Mullen, now in her 25th season, guided the Cardinals to 12 NESCAC tournament­s and two trips to the NCAA Championsh­ip from 2000-2014. Mullen, who was voted the NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2003, led Wesleyan to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2005.

RAFFERTY REACHES 1000 POINT MILESTONE >> At Lewiston, Me., senior guard Harry Rafferty scored his 1000th career point in the Cardinals’ 67-64 NESCAC victory against Bates on Saturday.

Nathan Krill paced No. 24 Wesleyan (15-4, 3-3 NESCAC) by posting a doubledoub­le with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Kevin O’Brien added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Marcus Delpeche led Bates (12-6, 3-3 NESCAC) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Rafferty, who finished with 15 points, became the 23rd player in Wesleyan men’s basketball history to join the 1,000-point club and fifth player to reach the milestone during head coach Joe Reilly’s tenure.

TUFTS 77, WESLEYAN 73 >> At Medford, Mass., KJ Garrett scored a game-high 16 points and Tarik Smith scored 13 points to lift the fourth-ranked Jumbos (142, 5-0 NESCAC) on Friday night.

Senior guard Harry Rafferty had 15 points, while Salim Green and Joseph Kuo each had 13 points for the Cardinals (14-4, 2-3 NESCAC).

Women’s ice hockey

WESLEYAN 2, HAMILTON 1 >> At Clinton, N.Y., sophomore Jackie Kilar scored the game-winning goal at 8:33 of the third period to lift the Cardinals on Saturday at Russell Sage Rink.

Cici Frattasio scored a first period power play goal and goalkeeper Allegra Grant made 35 saves to earn her sixth win for Wesleyan (7-5-3, 4-3-1 NESCAC).

Gillian Roberts also netted a third period goal for Hamilton (8-5-2, 4-3-1 NESCAC).
