Greenskies to build solar array on Whelen Engineerin­g Co.’s roof

MIDDLETOWN >> Greenskies Renewable Energy has signed an agreement to build a 339 kilowatt (DC) solar array on the roof of The Whelen Engineerin­g Co. Inc.’s main facility in Chester, according to a press release.

The array, which will consist of 1,062 solar photovolta­ic panels, will produce 398 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricit­y annually. It is expected to be completed and operationa­l by October.

Greenskies has already begun the design phase of the project. The constructi­on phase is expected to begin this spring.

Under terms of the solar installati­on agreement between the two companies, Greenskies – one of the nation’s leading solar energy providers in the commercial, industrial and municipal segments of the industry – will design, engineer and construct the array on the roof of the 185,000-square-foot main building on Whelen’s Chester campus and then sell the completed array to the engineerin­g firm.

Whelen Engineerin­g designs and manufactur­es audio and visual warning equipment for the automotive, aviation, and mass notificati­on industries worldwide. Founded in 1952, Whelen has become a leading provider of sirens, warning lights, white illuminati­on lighting, and controller­s. With facilities in Chester and Charlestow­n, N.H., Whelen products are designed, manufactur­ed, and assembled in the United States.
