Sessions should sit out Flynn probe
Here we go again. This past November, I ran unsuccessfully for the 33rd District’s state representative seat against 24-year Democrat incumbent Joseph Serra.
While campaigning, I spoke with Middletown residents about the number one thing they would change in the state of Connecticut: 97 percent of those interviewed and others that filled out my questionnaire indicated that taxes were the number one issue.
Serra has voted for almost every single tax increase and surcharge for a quarter of a century and a vote for Joe was a vote for more taxes. I can assure you, he has not let you down.
On the second day of this Legislative session, Jan. 5, he put his name to the Proposed Bill #5207, which intends to put a surcharge (tax) on all homeowners and renters insurance.
The proposed bill asks for a surcharge on the “net direct premiums of homeowners and renters insurance policies written on property or risks located or resident in this state to fund the operating budgets of regional fire schools, certain training costs and fees and purchases of fire equipment.”
When Connecticut citizens are fleeing the state of Connecticut in droves, citing taxes, your state Rep. Joe Serra is adding fuel to the fire with more taxes disguised as surcharges on every homeowner and renter. Instead of finding ways to lower expenses within the state, he is still proposing to drain the taxpayers left here in the state of the last few dollars they have, most of which can’t afford what they are already paying. Instead of finding ways to increase revenue with new businesses and jobs, he is searching for ways to make more citizens leave the state.
As I warned the Middletown residents during the 2016 campaign, a vote for Joseph Serra would be a vote for more taxes. He ran on his record of taxing anyone and everyone instead of looking for an alternative solution.
I believe that the voters that voted for Joseph Serra in November should not have a right to complain about taxes here in Connecticut. No more whining for you; you got what you voted for. You can’t say you didn’t know he’d propose more taxes — you were informed and shown that he always voted for more taxes instead of lowering spending and helping to put our fiscal house in order. The elderly should pay close attention and see how much more of your money Joe will help the state of Connecticut take from your incomes.
I wonder how many more Connecticut and Middletown citizens (and businesses) will call other tax-friendly states home in the next two years. — Linda Szynkowicz, former candidate for the 33rd District, Middletown
