According to a tweet sent out Saturday night by Adam Finkelstein, a scout/analyst for @ESPNRNHoops, Notre Dame-West Haven senior guard Tremont Waters has requested to be released from his scholarship at Georgetown, according to Waters’ father, Ed.

Waters, the leading scorer in the area at 23.2 ppg., had signed a national letter of intent at the Farnam Neighborhood House in New Haven last October, choosing Georgetown over Indiana. Waters, a New Haven native, also had scholarship offers from UConn, Yale, Kentucky, Duke and Kansas.

“They (Georgetown) waited so long from the beginning. They were my first visit,” Waters said at the time of his signing. “To have me visit Kentucky, Indiana and Kansas after, they had to wait four weeks and they didn’t message me a lot. They were just being patient. I was all in after

I went back (for a second time).”

Waters transferred to Notre Dame from South Kent in August. Notre Dame went 20-0 during the regular season, but lost in the SCC tournament final to Hillhouse, then were upset by Danbury in the second round of the Class LL state tournament.

Waters posted to his Instagram page Saturday night: “After observing everything that’s been occurring lately and thoroughly thinking of this next decision ... I want to respectfully remove myself from Georgetown University. I would like to look at options that I feel will help my basketball career as well as my academics. I know that people are going to have an opinion and I would love for everyone to respect mine as well. This is my life, thank you!”

Georgetown just completed its second straight losing season, going 14-18 after a loss to St. John’s in the opening round of the Big East tournament. Head coach John Thompson III, who came to see Waters play last month against Wilbur Cross, is reportedly on the hot seat, a decade after taking the Hoyas to the Final Four, but likely will survive despite outcries for his dismissal.

Normally, when a coach is dismissed, athletes tend to be let go from their scholarships if they choose. It remains to be seen if that will happen assuming Thompson III stays on.
