Cops: Rundown followed pipe attack

EAST HAMPTON >> A 24-year-old local man is charged with running over a person with his car after assaulting the victim during a domestic dispute this weekend, police say.

East Hampton police were called to a disturbance on Sunday at about 1:47 p.m. at a home on Coughlin Road in which the suspect fled the scene in a white-andblack Chevrolet pickup truck after committing an assault, according to a police report.

Officers said several residents of the house were threatened with a metal pipe and a 30-year-old man was attacked, then run over by the suspect in his vehicle. The victim was taken to Middlesex Medical Center in Marlborough for treatment of his injuries, police said.

An investigation and witness interviews identified the suspect as 24-yearold Alex Banning of East Hampton, who was found shortly afterward in the Stop & Shop parking lot on East High Street, according to the report.

Banning was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, third-degree assault, firstdegree reckless endangerment, possession of a dangerous instrument, second-degree threatening, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, two counts of evading responsibility, misuse of marker plates, failure to carry minimum insurance, operating under suspension, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Banning was held in lieu of $50,000 bail and was set to appear at Middlesex Superior Court Monday.
