Cops: Rundown followed pipe attack

EAST HAMPTON >> A 24-year-old local man is charged with running over a person with his car after assaulting the victim during a domestic dispute this weekend, police say.

East Hampton police were called to a disturbanc­e on Sunday at about 1:47 p.m. at a home on Coughlin Road in which the suspect fled the scene in a white-andblack Chevrolet pickup truck after committing an assault, according to a police report.

Officers said several residents of the house were threatened with a metal pipe and a 30-year-old man was attacked, then run over by the suspect in his vehicle. The victim was taken to Middlesex Medical Center in Marlboroug­h for treatment of his injuries, police said.

An investigat­ion and witness interviews identified the suspect as 24-yearold Alex Banning of East Hampton, who was found shortly afterward in the Stop & Shop parking lot on East High Street, according to the report.

Banning was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, third-degree assault, firstdegre­e reckless endangerme­nt, possession of a dangerous instrument, second-degree threatenin­g, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, two counts of evading responsibi­lity, misuse of marker plates, failure to carry minimum insurance, operating under suspension, operating an unregister­ed motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Banning was held in lieu of $50,000 bail and was set to appear at Middlesex Superior Court Monday.
