MIDDLETOWN >> Larceny charges have been filed against a city man who allegedly stole $1,400 and a gold ring while working for a moving company.

James Weston, 28, of Traverse Square, was arrested March 13 and charged with fourth-degree larceny.

The moving company, which was not identified in the police report, had conducted a residential move from one Grand Street home to another when the homeowner said a metal lock box from a three-drawer chest in the bedroom had gone missing. An 18k gold ring with a snake down its side valued at approximately $500 and some cash had been in the locked box, the victim said, according to the report.

A witness told police that Weston had been seen going to his car and possibly placing an item in his glove box after the Grand Street job, according to the report.

When police arrested Watson, he claimed he knew nothing of the stolen items. After a sergeant came to the scene to question him, he admitted the money was in the backseat of his car and he allowed police to search the vehicle, police said.

Weston, who has several prior criminal convictions for failure to appear and resisting arrest, was released on a misdemeanor summons and scheduled to appear in court on April 6. He was also fired from the moving company and told no to come back or he would be arrested for trespassing, police said.
