And now, UConn is losing a player who never even made it into a Husky uniform.

Makai Ashton-Langford, the point guard from Brewster Academy who committed to UConn in September, has asked for a release from his scholarship, according to ESPN.com.

Ashton-Langford is the latest member of the program to leave over the past week. Sophomore Steve Enoch and freshman Vance Jackson have announced they will be transferring, while associate head coach Glen Miller was let go.

Ashton-Langford, who was just in New Haven a few weeks ago helping Brewster win the national prep tournament, said the latter played a role in his decision.

“At first, it was mainly because of Coach Miller leaving that made me think about it,” the 6-foot-2 guard told ESPN. com’s Adam Finkelstein. “But as I started to do that, I realized I kind of made my first decision spontaneously right after my visit.”

Ashton-Langford, a Worcester, Massachusetts native who boasts a similar skill set of other UConn point guards of the past, seemed to be following the path of another Bay State product: Jalen Adams. Like Adams, he began his prep career at Cushing Academy, then transferred to Brewster for his final season.

Unlike Adams, he’ll never spend a minute in a UConn uniform.

Ashton-Langford chose UConn over Providence and Louisville. It was really down to UConn and Providence at the end, he told the Register back in September.

With Ashton-Langford gone, the Huskies have only three

guards for next season — Adams, Alterique Gilbert (who missed all but three games his freshman season due to a recurring shoulder injury) and rising sophomore Christian Vital.

The Huskies hired former Washington associate head coach Raphael Chillious earlier this week to replace Miller. Chillious is known as a top recruiter and is already bringing former Washington signee Blake Harris, a guard, in for a UConn visit later this month, according to reports.
