NCAA awards several championships to state

The NCAA is bringing the men’s lacrosse national championships to Rentschler Field in 2021 and 2022 and the Women’s Frozen Four returns to Quinnipiac in 2019 among other announcements made.

The women’s Frozen Four is returning to Quinnipiac in 2019 while Rentschler Field in East Hartford will be the site of the men’s lacrosse national championship games in 2021 and 2022.

The NCAA announced more than 600 sites for preliminary rounds through finals for multiple sports through 2022 on Tuesday. The state of Connecticut will play host to several prominent events in that time frame, most notably in women’s hockey and men’s lacrosse.

Quinnipiac’s TD Bank Sports Center landed the women’s Frozen Four for the second time, having played host to the event in 2014.

Rentschler Field was awarded quarterfinal games in men’s lacrosse in 2019, with the national semifinal and championship games in 2021 and 2022. Fairfield sponsored the bid, and serves as the host school. It marks the first time the lacrosse championship will be contested in Connecticut. The event is at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts the next two years, to be followed by two years at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field.

Hartford’s XL Center is the site of first- and secondround games of the men’s basketball tournament on March 21 and 23, 2019.

Bridgeport’s Webster Bank Arena was selected for the men’s hockey East Regional in 2018, a joint sponsorship between Yale and Fairfield. Games will be played March 23-25, with the regional winner heading to the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota. Bridgeport was the site of hockey regionals in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014, consistently one of the best-attended regionals each time.

The Course at Yale, which played host to an NCAA golf regional two years ago, landed the same event for 2022.
