Free youth fishing derby coming up

MIDDLETOWN >> The city will host a youth fishing derby April 29 at Butternut Pond from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The event, sponsored by the city’s recreation and community services, planning, conservati­on and developmen­t; public works and health department­s, will be held rain or shine. It is for Middletown residents ages 4 to 14.

Volunteers will be available to help children and there will be a limited number of fishing poles to borrow. The Fishin’ Factory of Middletown has donated bait for the free event.

On-site registrati­on that day runs from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., with awards at 10:45 a.m.

Registrati­on is available online at middletown­ct. gov/webtrac, by mail or in person at the senior center, 61 Durant Terrace.

On the day of the derby, registrati­ons will be taken on a limited basis — up to 250 slots are open.
