Area students earn honors
San Jose State University
BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA >> Christa Green of Middletown was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Green was initiated at San Jose State University.
Green is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.
Ithaca College
ITHACA, NEW YORK >> Mirelle Tinker, a television-radio major at Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications and Higganum native, was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Association of Communication, on April 18.
Independent Day School
MIDDLEFIELD >> The Independent Day School recognizes the following students for their academic achievements in the third quarter.
Middletown: Seventhgrader Sabrina Iannucci earned high honors. Seventh-graders Kathryn Gendrich, Quinn Kessel, Madeline Landers, Aria Sinnappen and eighth graders Elias Bachner, Ethan Ciak, Julia Cunningham, Melissa Hasbrouck and Allison Mahr earned honors.
Durham: Eighth-grader Francesca Antonopoulos earned high honors while the following students achieved honors: Ava Hammond, sixth grade, Ryan Gerry, seventh grade, Sofia Karatzas, seventh grade, William Foster, eighth grade.
Portland: Eighth-grader Emily Gouin earned high honors while sixth-grader Jack Gouin of Portland earned honors, as did seventh-grader Sadie Schmitz.
East Hampton: Sixthgraders Orr Teva and Grace Resor, and eighth-grader Lily Sabatta of the Moodus section of town all achieved honors.
Champlain College
BURLINGTON, VERMONT >> Christopher Lynch of Middletown was nominated for a student employee award at the student employee recognition event April 11 at Champlain College, which celebrated the work that more than 725 students have put in this year with free food, gifts, raffles and a video created by fellow student workers. The awards were granted based off recommendations from student’s supervisors. There was a winner and a runner-up for each of the seven awards, and a total of 53 nominees.
Hofstra University
HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK >> About 700 students earned their undergraduate, graduate or law degrees at Hofstra University’s midyear commencement ceremonies on Dec. 21, 2016, including:
Timothy Breuer of Cromwell, with a doctor of philosophy in clinical psychology.
Oksana Nichols of Haddam, with a bachelor of arts in global studies.

College of Saint Rose
ALBANY, NEW YORK >> The College of Saint Rose announced that Abagail Luther of Killingworth is one of 127 students who received honors for outstanding academic achievement.
Luther received the The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, a new award from the Theodore Presser Foundation. It is presented to an outstanding music student who is at or near the end of his or her junior year and is based on merit and achievement.
