Democrats are spot on and Republicans are absolutely wrong on tolls

- By Wayne Hugli Wayne Hugli is a West Haven resident

I occasionally drive the interstates south of Connecticut and of course those roads are Easy Pass toll roads. And I don’t mind paying the tolls, the roads for the most part are in excellent condition and safe.

Our legislative nitwits in Hartford continue to show their incompetence in passing a means of easy income to help the taxpayers of Connecticut. Specifically, tolls. As a Republican, I must state I rarely agree with Democratic ideas, but in regards to instituting tolls on Connecticut interstate highways, the Democrats are spot on and Republicans are absolutely wrong.

I occasionally drive the interstates south of Connecticut and of course those roads are Easy Pass toll roads. And I don’t mind paying the tolls, the roads for the most part are in excellent condition and safe.

If it wasn’t for some overhead supports with the toll equipment and signs, a driver would never know a toll is being collected. No stopping, not even any slowing down of vehicle speed in most places.

Now keep in mind that those tolls, in those states, are every few miles of travel, not just on borders. And every time a Connecticut resident uses those roads, we pay for the right to use those roads, as we should.

But no, our incompetent legislative nitwits in Hartford can’t even agree to put tolls just on our borders to collect a fee from travelers just passing through Connecticut. Some legislative nitwits who represent border towns claim back roads will be backed up with travelers getting off the highways to avoid paying the tolls. This is hogwash. In this day and age, travelers are in too much of a hurry to try to skip tolls.

And other legislative nitwits claim Connecticut residents will be unfairly tolled when using the highways. True, but only when crossing the border. And if these Connecticut residents crossed the border on a daily basis, tolling computers can be programmed to exempt them from paying. Not possible? More hogwash! Other nitwits in Hartford want to program computers to put an extra tax on all beverages which contain sugar. Imagine that. If the computers can be made to tax sugary drinks, hundreds of them, computers can certainly be made to exempt residents from paying tolls.

Why not collect a toll from travelers just passing through Connecticut to help keep our interstate highways in excellent condition and safe? Connecticut is a small state and travelers know enough to gas up before entering Connecticut to avoid paying our outrageous gas tax. And also our food tax! No tax yet on using restrooms on our interstates, but one never knows what those nitwits in Hartford will come up with.

These next few days will be very interesting.
