MIDDLETOWN >> A NFL star is returning to his native city Saturday to sign autographs during the Middletown Kids Health & Safety Day.

New York Giants tight end Will Tye will be signing autographs from noon to 1 p.m. during the family event. “We are extremely pleased that Will Tye will be joining us,” said event chairman, Middletown Police Officer Anthony Knapp in a press release. “Will is a Middletown native helping to support the goal of our event, which is not only to educate children and their caregivers about

wellness and safety, but the resources available to them in time of need.”

During the event, Main Street, between Dingwall Drive and Court Street, will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day features information from a variety of local and state-wide agencies on topics like Lyme disease, injury prevention, exercise and nutrition, and includes blood pressure, spinal, dental and vison health screenings.

Helping parents ensure their child’s safety is a primary focus of the event, Knapp said. “Parents can register their kids with Amber Alert, which can be vital in case of child abduction. They can also get their kids’ fingerprints, DNA, still photos and video from the Connecticut Free Masons Child-Identification program.” There will be interactive exhibits and fun activities. “Kids can learn how to survive a fire in the fire department’s smoke house trailer, climb aboard a fire rescue truck and sit in a police cruiser,” Knapp said in the release.

There will also be face painting, spin and sand art, a photo booth, moon bounces and Home Depot building workshop. Other events include a family bike ride, bicycle safety rodeo and car seat safety clinic.

Weather permitting, Middletown Complete Streets will kick off the day with a five-mile ride bike ride for parents and kids. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the corner of Court and Main streets with the ride beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Middletown Kiwanis is sponsoring a bicycle-safety rodeo and giving away bike helmets on a first-come, first-serve basis to kids who bring their bicycle for a free safety inspection. A car seat safety clinic will held behind the police station, where certified technicians will inspect the safety devices.

All activities are free, including parking at MiddleOak Garage (College and Court streets) Mellili Parking lot (adjacent to City Hall) and the Upper Parking Arcade on Court Street. The event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Main Street between Court and College streets.
