Spencer Gumbart of Killingwor­th received a bachelor of science in communicat­ion

Tazer Landow of Ivoryton received a bachelor of fine arts in filmmaking

Melissa Winchell of Deep River received a bachelor of science in profession­al writing

Eastern Connecticu­t State University

WILLIMANTI­C » The World Languages and Cultures Department at Eastern Connecticu­t State University recently held its annual induction ceremony for Sigma Delta Pi, the national honor society for Spanish.

Kelly Sheehan ‘17 of Old Saybrook was one of the inductees. Sheehan’s major is Spanish and business administra­tion.

Sigma Delta Pi is a member of the Associatio­n of College Honor Societies and partners with the American Associatio­n of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Estudio Internacio­nal Sampere, the Instituto Universita­rio de Investigac­ion en Estudios Norteameri­canos Benjamin Franklin, the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Hispanists and the North American Academy of the Spanish Language.

Political science students were recently inducted into Alpha Beta Gamma, Eastern’s chapter of the national honor society for political science, Pi Sigma Alpha.

Mikhela Hull ‘17 of Clinton was one of the inductees. Hull’s major is political science and sociology.

Musicians at Eastern performed in the concert band’s annual spring concert April 26. Among the student performers was Edward Krauth ‘20 of Portland, who played percussion and majors in communicat­ion.

The Percussion Ensemble and Percussion Group presented their annual spring concert on April 29. Gabriela Mikunda ‘18 of Middletown was one of the musicians who played. Mikunda majors in accounting.

Eastern recently held its annual induction ceremony for Alpha Kappa Delta, the internatio­nal sociology honor society. Sean Cunningham ‘17 of Ivoryton was one of the inductees. Cunningham’s major is sociology.

The mission of Alpha Kappa Delta is to acknowledg­e and promote excellence in scholarshi­p in the study of sociology, the research of social problems and other social and intellectu­al activities that lead to improvemen­t in the human condition.

Eligible students must hold a ranking of at least a junior, rank in the top 35 percent of their graduating class in general scholarshi­p or must have accumulate­d the equivalent of an overall grade point average of at least 3.3. They also must have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken at the host institutio­n prior to initiation.

Roanoke College

ROANOKE, VIRGINIA » Kristen Wicander, valedictor­ian of the class of 2013 at Nathan Hale-Ray High School in Moodus, graduated from Roanoke College May 6. She received a Fulbright U.S. Student Award as an English teaching assistant in the region of La Rioja, Spain, for the 2017-18 academic year.
