Huskies roster missing two transfers

There’s a bit of good news and some bad news to report about the 2017 UConn football team.

UConn released its 2017 roster on Friday. Every high school player to sign with the Huskies in February is on the active roster. Former signee Jay Rose out of Southington has returned to the program, meaning that the entire 2016 signing class is also intact. Starting long snapper Nick Zecchino is back after not being with the program during the spring practice, while preferred walk-on Brian Keating is among those who will push Zecchino for the job of snapping on punts, field goals and extra points.

However, a pair of transfers expected to be a part of the program are not on the roster.

Former University of Miami defensive lineman Courtel Jenkins has enrolled at Houston, while former South Carolina running back David Williams will not join UConn as a graduate transfer as expected leaving the Huskies a little thin at the running back position. The Huskies have no players at that position in the true freshman class and former starting tailback Ron Johnson left the program after the end of the 2016 season.

Also, linebacker Nazir Williams is no longer a part of the program.

Williams was arrested along with former UConn defensive lineman Felton Blackwell in October on weapons charges. Williams was suspended but later reinstated. Williams took part in spring drills and had a tackle in the spring game. When the roster was released, it was announced that Williams was dismissed due to violation of Division of Athletics policy.

Nazir Williams is one of five players who was on the spring roster who is no longer a part of the program, joining fellow linebackers William Richardson and Luke Sowa, fullback Teddy Allmendinger and defensive lineman Tom Tabur.
