RCP-Glastonbury game suspended
CROMWELL » Defending Zone 7 and Connecticut champion RCP got its zone game with Glastonbury at Fran Monnes Field started Friday evening, but didn’t get very far as lightning, then rain suspended the game in the bottom of the first with Glastonbury leading 1-0.
The game will be resumed today at 1 p.m. at Monnes Field.
All Connecticut American Legion games, once started, must be played until the game is official.
With thunder rumbling in the distance, the game started on time and Glastonbury (10-6) struck quickly off RCP starter Joe Vail.
Leadoff hitter Tyler Van Dyke lined a double to right, he was bunted along by Ryan Molinari and scored on a ground ball to the right side by Nick Clemente for the lead.
RCP’s first two hitters made quick outs off Glastonbury starter Tommy Kuzoian, but Trevor Whalen then hit a long double to left and with a 2-2 count on Kevin Larkin, a lightning bolt caused the umpires to suspend play and worsening conditions caused the game to be officially suspended 15 minutes later.
RCP is in command of the Zone 7 race at 16-0. It holds a five game lead over Berlin (8-5) and a six-game lead over three other teams in the loss column.
RCP plays Berlin in a doubleheader on Sunday in Cromwell at 11 a.m. The magic number for clinching the zone title is four. If RCP wins four more zone games it cannot be caught.
