SERC Library reopens in new space July 5

-

MIDDLETOWN » The State Education Resource Center (SERC) will reopen its Library on Wednesday, July 5 at its new, temporary space on the first floor of 100 Roscommon Drive, located off Industrial Park Road in Middletown, CT.

This location, which houses SERC’s offices and is down the street from the previous location, will serve as a temporary home for the library while a more permanent location is determined over the next six months.

The library closed temporarily and relocated due to fiscal and space constraints, reducing the availability of some resources with the exception of testing materials. The public is free to call ahead at 860-632-1485 x4 with questions about a particular resource. (Note: Professional books are temporarily unavailable.)

Summer hours will be in effect: Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Saturday and extended evening hours will resume in September.) Visitor and accessible parking spaces are available; visitors will find these as posted near the main entrance to the building.

Since SERC’s inception in 1969, the SERC Library has served Connecticut as a unique combination of public library, specialized library and academic library. The Library has helped tens of thousands of general and special educators, educators-in-training and families of children with special needs through its relevant, timely and highquality resources in the field of education and related services. Additional updates on the transition process will be posted on the Library homepage, blog, and Facebook page, as well as SERC’s social media and web pages, accessible through www.ctserc.org.

Artspace photo exhibit to open at Cheshire library

CHESHIRE » Artsplace Annual Art Show, “It Doesn’t Look Like the Photo!” runs from July 5-28 in the Mary Baldwin room at the Cheshire Public Library.

Artsplace students, teachers and staff were presented with three different photographs several weeks ago and asked to use one or all for inspiration to create a piece of art. Artists generally freely crop, change and eliminate subjects from photos to create art. Many non-artists have not realized this is the normal approach and assume that the artwork and reference photos match. Artwork in oil, acrylic, watercolor, felt, collage and more will show the success dozens of artists achieved in this exhibit.

The public is invited to a reception on Tuesday, July 11 from 7-8 p.m. Call the library at 203-272-2245 in advance for hours the Baldwin room is available for viewing; the library is not open on weekends during the summer.
