Veteran service award nomination­s sought by Middlesex chamber

MIDDLETOWN » Phil Cacciola, chairman of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce Support the Troops/Honor the Veterans Committee announced that nomination­s for the William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award will be accepted at the Middlesex Chamber’s office until Aug. 25, at 4:30 p.m.

The William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award is presented to a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces in recognitio­n of his or her distinguis­hed service to the citizens of Connecticu­t, and selfless commitment to public service.

To qualify for the nomination, the candidate must have served in a branch of the United States Armed Forces and continue to promote Veterans Affairs, she must participat­e in local and state community organizati­ons and/or initiative­s, and must live in either Chester, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Middlefiel­d, Middletown, Portland or Westbrook.

The William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award is presented annually at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Support the Troops & Honor the Veterans Member Breakfast Meeting.

This year’s event will take place on Monday, Nov. 6 at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell, with guest speaker Colonel Christophe­r Beckert, Director at Center for Strategic Leadership, U.S. Army War College.

Bill Pomfret served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a member of the American Legion for 60 years, holding offices of State Commander, State Treasurer and Commander of Middletown Post 75.

He graduated from Middletown High School in 1935 where he served as Class President.

He served on the Middletown Common Council, was the first President of the Ahern Whalen Baseball League, and was the founder and first president of the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame.

He served for years as Administra­tor of the state’s Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Fund for Veterans and their dependents.

He also served in many other civic, veteran, sports, and youth organizati­ons.

The William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award is presented to a veteran of the United States Armed Forces in recognitio­n of his or her distinguis­hed service to the citizens of Connecticu­t, and selfless commitment to public service.

The recipient of this award is decided by a committee of its previous winners.

To nominate a candidate for this award, submit the name of the individual, a detailed resume and/or a biography, supporting documents detailing their military and community service, and any other informatio­n you believe the committee should have.

H/K Recreation announces free outdoor summer concert series

HIGGANUM » The free outdoor summer concert series, sponsored by the HK Recreation Department began July 14. Bring a blanket or a chair to enjoy an evening of live entertainm­ent on the town green.

An ice cream truck will be on site and the Higganum Market will also be available until 7 p.m. Coyote Blue, Crossroads Driving School, Higganum Pharmacy, Higganum Veterinary Clinic, Higganum Village Market, RAD Computing and Killingwor­th True Value have made donations to help support the series.

Friday, July 21: Wooden Horse: Wooden Horse is New England’s premier Crosby, Stills & Nash and America musical tribute act.

Friday, July 28: Leaf Jumpers: Leaf Jumpers are a longtime Connecticu­t band which has played all over the East Coast. Performing for the past twenty years, the band has a long list of accomplish­ments and a strong musical background.

Friday, Aug. 4: Rock Solid Alibi: Rock Solid Alibi is a group of seasoned musicians who have performed together over the last 25 years.

Humane society fundraiser set Aug. 3

MIDDLETOWN » The office of Cavanaugh & Company, 98 Washington St., Middletown, will host an adult lemonade stand on Thursday, Aug. 3, at Luce Restaurant in Middletown, along with Lan Chi’s Restaurant.

Tito’s Vodka is the event’s beverage sponsor for the event, and I-Heart Radio will provide on-air coverage.

CHS Ambassador­s will be on-site as well as the “Tito’s Girls” with tasting samples and animal-themed swag.

Neighbors at Sandler, Hansen and Alexander (http://ctcondoatt­orneys.com) is the food sponsor and is sponsoring the adoption fees for some pets.
