• In West Haven, Team Bomba beat Sully’s Slammers to win the sixth annual Mark Romano Memorial Coed Beach Volleyball Tournament for the second year. The Department of Parks and Recreation event July 29 raised $950 for a breast cancer charity. Romano supervised the leagues for many years and died in 2012 at age 49. Six teams competed in the double-eliminatio­n tourney.

• Quinnipiac University’s Faculty Senate honored Thomas Martin, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, with a Faculty Scholar award. Martin, of North Branford, has been on the faculty since 2012. His research centers on different aspects of human performanc­e, specifical­ly the risk factors associated with anterior cruciate ligament knee injuries.

• North Haven Education Associatio­n Secretary Krista Kaplan, a teacher at North Haven Middle School, was recently honored by the CT Education Associatio­n’s Representa­tive Assembly. She received first-place awards for her work on the NHEA website and the newsletter and won the John Rogers Memorial Award for her curricular work on diversity issues.
