• The North Haven Garden Club received a grant from the North Haven Rotary Club at its annual Community Recognitio­n Luncheon held July 25 at Fantasia. Cindy Golia, treasurer of the North Haven Garden Club, accepted the award from future Rotary Club President Mary Minotti.

• Hamden area students were honored as finalists at the 13th annual eesmarts™ Student Contest ceremony held at the State Capitol.

Lasya Josyula won third place, kindergart­en, for her poster about saving energy. It shows a child wearing a warm sweater and includes this energy-saving tip: “Instead of using your heater, you can put on a sweater.”

Cole Christman won second place, Grade 3. His story about recycling showed how a fun day at the beach became memorable when best friends Trey and Zach noticed that the beach’s recycling bin was not accessible. They decided to bring it outside and from then on the beach was free of litter.

Waliullah Ammar Khawaja won third place, Grade 4. His news story instructs parents to teach children that it is essential to conserve energy. He suggests parents remind them to use less water, turn off the lights and television not in use, and that we all need to reduce usage because energy resources are finite.

Mujtaba Ather won first place, Grade 5, for his book review of “Just A Dream” by Chris Van Allsburg. He reflects on the main character, Walter, and parallels the perils to now. Mujtaba encourages readers to be good environmen­tal stewards by concluding, “‘We have met the enemy and he is us.’”
