Former Register MVPs team up

- Joe Morelli

The last two Register Area MVPs for boys high school golf will be teammates this week.

Before he heads off to UConn, Finn Boynton, this past spring season’s MVP from Notre DameWest Haven, will represent the Connecticut Juniors in the New England Junior Invitational at Manchester Country Club in Manchester, Vermont.

Chris Fosdick of Middlefield, the 2016 Area MVP as a freshman at Xavier, will make his first appearance on the team. He qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur this summer.

“I love this event and I love the format,” said Boynton, playing in the invitational for the second straight year. “It’s a great way to end my summer golf schedule and prepare for UConn because it follows the same format that many college tournaments follow.”

The New England teams will play 36 holes on Tuesday and a final 18 holes Wednesday. Massachusetts is the defending champion and has won three of the last four years.

Boynton, a Milford resident, tied for 18th last year.

“I feel our team has a great chance of winning the event if we all play well,” said Boynton, who won the Jay Borck Tournament last week at Shorehaven GC.

“I’ve heard it’s a lot of fun, so I can’t wait to play,” said Fosdick, 16.

The rest of the team is as follows: Will Wilson of Darien, the State Junior Amateur champion; Austin Rupp of Suffield, the Connecticut Junior PGA Championship winner; Alexander Gu of Darien; Jackson Fretty of Cos Cob; and Tyler Hahn of Avon.

The last time Connecticut won was in 2012. the infrastructure necessary. It would have been a lot tougher (dealing with larger galleries),” Grube said.

Grube also noted that the tournament also has two new corporate partners and some sponsorships have been renewed already for next year, earlier than in the past. The buzz hasn’t died down in the tournament’s aftermath.
