To connect with vets, police partner with Veterans Count

Initiative identifies officers who are military veterans

MIDDLETOWN » An Easterseals program that helps connect service members and their families with programs and services has forged a partnership with the Middletown Police Department that will identify officers as military veterans.

Since 2013, officers who are veterans have been wearing pins that recognize their service to the nation. Veterans Count has provided officers with two versions of pins based upon the class of uniform they are wearing, as well as custom printed cards for the Law Enforcement Assistance Program program, according to a press release.

Instead of a veteran seeing an officer in a blue uniform and badge, he or she can recognize a commonality with the officer as a fellow veteran, according to Veterans Count.

“Our goal for this initiative is for veterans to feel comfortable asking questions and seeking assistance where they might be otherwise hesitant,” said Middletown Police Capt. Gary Wallace, investigative services division commander and Gulf War veteran, in a prepared statement.

“There often tends to be a disconnect between veterans and the community,” Wallace said in the release. “I recall returning home from the end of my obligated service and never thought that I needed any kind of help.

“That could not have been further from the truth. I believe that a simple pin worn on the uniform to symbolize that deep appreciation for service would be a great way to make that connection. Officers often get to know people after coming in contact with them over time. We need to find a way to make that rapport building happen faster,” he said.
