FIDDLERS’ WORKSHOP CONCERT: Fiddlers’ Workshop Concert will be held Aug. 19, 1:30 a.m. in the Hubbard Room, Russell Library, 123 Broad Street, Middletown. This concert, hosted by the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers Club, is the culmination of their students’ summer series of free lessons. CBOTFC formed in 1972 to ensure that old time fiddling music endures for public enjoyment. The club has been playing throughout Connecticut for 45 years. DATTCO SUPPLY DRIVE: DATTCO, the student transportation provider for Middletown Public Schools, is hosting a school supply drive to benefit the City’s students

and teachers, Saturday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. DATTCO will park a bus at Spencer Elementary School, 207 Westfield St., Middletown. The public is encouraged to stuff the bus with supplies to help our students succeed. Items requested include traditional supplies (i.e. binders, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, etc.) calculators, dictionaries, backpacks that are large enough to hold binders and text books, and gift cards to Staples, Walmart, grocery stores, or other similar retailers. Middletown School Administrators will distribute the supplies to the school and students most in need. CAR WASH: Faith Lutheran Church, Middletown, will hold a Car Wash for Camperships and a bake sale Saturday, Aug. 19, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Ace Hardware on South Main Street. Finish with BBQ lunch at Taino next door. If you can’t come or bake, consider making a donation to help out. Ace will provide hoses, water, and a table for the bake sale; bring buckets, sponges, and car soap, as well as baked goods and signs. Kids of all ages are welcome, but anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. CHARITY VISIT: In 2001, just after the civil war that decimated Sierra Leone, Tom Johnson, cousin of Gerry Matthews, president of St. Peter Church Parish Council, returned there to restore a beekeeping project he had previously established while in the Peace Corps. He found a dire need for medical assistance and was compelled to facilitate health care and surgery for the vulnerable population. He organized “Africa Surgery” (www.africasurgery.org) which uses 100 percent of funds donated for the care of children and adult patients in Sienna Leone. Known there as “the white man on a bicycle”, Johnson spends five months a year living in a native hut with no utilities, traversing the country to bring medical assistance to the most needy.
