‘In Italy’ features photos by Johanson
Display is at Middlesex Community College’s Pegasus Gallery from Sept. 12 to Oct. 26, with reception set for Sept. 20
MIDDLETOWN » “In Italy,” an exhibit of photographs by Roger Carl Johanson, will be on display at Middlesex Community College’s Pegasus Gallery from Sept. 12 to Oct. 26, with an opening reception scheduled for Sept. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. including a talk by the artist.
According to a news release, “Johanson’s gelatin silver black and white photographs attempt to blend a glimpse of scientific, sculptural, architectural and humanistic interests while exploring the artistic communities of Florence, Venice and Rome. He is not attempting to narrate a specific story, but hopes the viewer will envision his or her own dream story while viewing both realistic and abstracted imagery. Roger utilizes extremely select positioning and focus to isolate, emphasize, collect light and frame images that often leaves questions for the viewer.”
Johanson studied art and technology at SUNY Buffalo, has a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin — Madison, and did post-graduate work at Massachusetts College of Art, RISD, Center for Photography at Woodstock and the International Center for Photography, NYC.
Johanson has been an art educator for more than 30 years, and has taught summer workshops at Mass. College of Art, Haystack School of Crafts, Me., Hinckley School, Me., deCordova Museum, Ma., and Brookfield Craft Center, Ct.
His photography work has been in more than 45 regional and national juried exhibits since 2005, as well as invited solo and twoand three-artist exhibits.
He has been a deCordova Museum, Ma. Corporate Lending Artist, and his photographs are in corporate and private collections.
Pegasus Gallery is in the library on the first floor of Chapman Hall. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
