Handler trading Netflix show for activism

“Chelsea,” the Netflix program hosted by Chelsea Handler, will not continue after its current second season. In a statement posted on her Twitter account, Handler said she was ending the series to focus on political activism, travel the country and work on a new Netflix documentar­y project.

“Like so many across the country, the past presidenti­al election and the countless events that have unfolded since have galvanized me,” Handler wrote in her statement. “From the national level down to the grassroots, it’s clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation.”

Handler said in her statement that new episodes of the show would continue to run through the end of the year. She would also create a new nonfiction project for Netflix, she said, “where I’ll engage with people I don’t talk with enough — people of different ethnicitie­s, religions and political philosophi­es.” campaign featuring trailers with no release date, as well as canceled appearance­s after the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Netflix has finally revealed when “The Punisher,” sure to be the streaming service’s most violent Marvel show, will debut.

The series, inspired by the comic book and starring Washington native Jon Bernthal as the lethal anti-hero, will be released Nov. 17. The show’s social media accounts revealed the date at the end of a trailer released Thursday.

By moving the premiere to November, the series shares a release date with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainm­ent’s “Justice League.”
