Affinity groups announce upcoming events

- KEVIN WILHELM Kevin Wilhelm is CEO and president of the Middlesex United Way in Middletown.

This coming week is going to be a busy one at Middlesex United Way, and we couldn’t be happier. Both of our affinity groups are excited to announce their upcoming events, one geared toward young professionals, and the other toward women in our community. Both of these events are open to anyone looking to get involved, and we would love to have you.

If you’re interested in networking with young professionals in Middlesex County, I encourage you to check out the Middlesex United Way Young Leaders Society. This group hosts networking, volunteer, and leadership development events for young professionals who want to give back to the community.

On Wednesday, they are cohosting an event with College Creations, a marketplace for artistic college students and professors to bring their artwork to life and explore collections of other artists.

The event will take place at Chow Food and Beverage in Clinton, and will feature live music, a 50/50 raffle, one of a kind artwork from local artists, and networking opportunities. The cost of the event is $1, but that will include 10 percent off all food and beverage. With the purchase of artwork or apparel, attendees can receive 20 percent off food and drink.

The raffle will feature items from bellaPerlina Jewelry, New England Black Wolves, RJ Julia, Washed Apparel, KChalk Designs, Ciao Bella, Elements Massage, Moxie Bar and Restaurant, Head Start Haircutters, Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, Bright Side Lifestyle, and Silver Moon Jewelry. Proceeds from the charity raffle will go toward benefiting Middlesex United Way and the Shoreline Arts Alliance. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. To learn more or RSVP, visit middlesexunitedway.org.

Throughout the rest of the year, the Young Leaders Society plans to host additional events, including cohosted networking with the Middlesex Chamber Young Professionals Alliance, a volunteer build day with Habitat for Humanity, a Learn with Leaders event featuring Comcast, and their annual Putts-for-aPurpose fundraiser to raise money to provide needy school children with school supplies.

Along with the Young Leaders Society, Middlesex United Way has a group dedicated to women’s needs in our community.

The Women’s Initiative celebrates the power of women to bring about positive change in our community through philanthropy and service.

If you would like to get involved with this group, we hope you’ll join us at the annual meeting Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Taphouse 150 in Cromwell. You’ll have the opportunity to hear from past members, learn about the impact the group has had over the past 10 years, and celebrate a decade of women’s philanthropic leadership. Dinner will be complimentary, and the event is free for Women’s Initiative members. There is a fee for nonmembers, but the fee can be waived for nonmembers who join the group at the annual meeting or beforehand.

To learn more or RSVP for this event, visit middlesexunitedway.org.

The Women’s Initiative will also host its annual fundraiser, Power of the Purse, June 14 at the Middletown Elks Lodge. In 2017, the event raised over $15,000, allowing the group to provide grants to organizations bettering the lives of women and children throughout Middlesex County. If you are interested in attending, or for sponsorship opportunities, please contact Marisa Fede at 860-346-8695.

If you’d like to join the mailing lists for either of these groups so that you’re the first to know about upcoming events, email Amanda.furlong@middlesexunitedway.org.

We hope to see you soon!
