Myriad business opportunities this month
It is important for organizations to remain vigilant of the occurrence that are happening around them, both locally and internationally. This month we are particularly fortunate because of the number of activities and events that could positively impact a business or offer learning moments for your organization or team.
For starters, February is Black History Month. Many local communities and schools have ceremonies or activities that highlight a variety of contributions to our country by black Americans. Additionally, television programming offers many historically accurate programs, discussions and movies by and about black Americans. These offerings are an easy way to add to one’s historical awareness.
The Super Bowl has come and gone, although not necessarily in Philadelphia. However, we are left with the best creativity and messaging that can be bought for $5 million for 30 seconds. Those commercials will be with us for some time as the sponsoring companies continue roll out the new marketing campaigns and products.
The Winter Olympics have arrived with the customary pageantry, drama and amazing athleticism. I continue to be amazed by the Olympics and the new levels of performance by the athletes. However, this Olympics offered us a glimpse into the robotic future. I saw one clip with a robot skiing down a hill. Other robots are servicing as translators. One was an Olympic torch bearer. The Smithsonian has an interesting story on the subject at www.smithsonianmag.com /innovation/meet-robots-2018olympics-180968031.
Fat Tuesday is a day of parades, partying, and bead throwing and catching. The transportation and tourism industry do well because some of the Mardi Gras and Carnival events are destinations and bucket list activities. The day is typically a good business day for local bars, parade services and restaurants.
Ash Wednesday is a day for religious services. It is a time for reflection, rededication and sacrifice at the beginning of the Lenten season.
Valentine’s Day has offered its opportunity for us to recognize our loved ones. I heard one report stating that the average cost of Valentine’s Day this year will be $150. At first glance, I thought that was high, then on second thought, the cost of a card, flowers and candy could get one near the average. A dinner or movie added to that number could put you above average. Also, the definition of valentine has changed and evolved over time, which has resulted in more people that just your true love being recipients of valentine offerings.
On Friday, it was the beginning of the Chinese New Year. This year in the Chinese zodiac is the Year of the Dog. There will be celebrations, parades, ceremonies and other activities commemorating the new year. For those who have trading partners in China, it is important not to miss important dates. For those of us with friends and associates who celebrate Chinese New Year, offer your congratulations.
The Daytona 500 is running today. It is a different showcase of technology and athleticism. The drivers are so skilled that they drive within one foot of the car in front of them at more than 200 mph. Also, as branding opportunities, the cars and drivers’ uniforms are great examples of how far we can go in that area. We hope for no accidents. However, the amazing thing is that when accidents do occur, in most cases the drivers are usually not seriously injured. It makes me wonder if the technology can prevent serious injury at 200 mph, why do we have serious injuries in accidents at 65 mph?
Situational awareness is what organizations use to make better decisions, capitalize on opportunities and have teaching and learning moments. We have been offered a few such opportunities this month.
