Arts, culture commission grants
EAST HAMPTON — The East Hampton Arts & Culture Commission welcomes grant applications from East Hampton organizations and individuals with programs and/or projects that enrich the lives of East Hampton residents through the arts.
One of two $500 grants are available to be awarded to individuals or organizations residing in East Hampton. The commission reserves the right to award a grant to an individual or organization it determines will have the most potential impact of arts and/or culture on the town. Incomplete forms will be denied; applicants can resubmit.
Criteria for awarding grants includes the artistic and organizational quality of the organization and/or project and its likelihood of continuing viability or success, and the organization’s or project’s accessibility and service to the East Hampton community. Grant recipients must credit the East Hampton Arts and Culture Commission on all press releases, posters, print advertising and programs.
An interview with the candidate may be requested prior to awarding the grant. A progress update progress will be required six months post-award date and a final report will be required one year post award date.

Conservation district to hold plant sale
OLD SAYBROOK — The Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District’s 27th annual plant sale fundraiser will take place April 27-29 at Old Saybrook Shopping Center in Old Saybrook, at the corner of Boston Post Road and Elm Street. Shoppers can take advantage of the variety of native shrubs, ground covers, evergreen tree seedlings, flowering perennials, ferns, grasses, and culinary herbs offered in the 2018 sale.
This year’s list features some new plants, such as the low-growing, aromatic Fragrant Sumac, and plants the district hasn’t carried recently, such as the showy Eastern Redbud, the brilliant Red Chokeberry; and an expanded ground cover and perennial section. They are also offering two Garden in a Box grouped selections in rustic pine boxes, one to attract pollinators, and the other hummingbirds and songbirds, as well as the popular Collins Organic Compost.

The Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Middletown, works to conserve the natural resources of towns in the lower Connecticut River watershed and coastal areas through technical assistance and education. Button society meets
PLAINVILLE — The Connecticut State Button Society will hold its annual early spring meeting at the Grace Lutheran Church, 222 Farmington Ave., Rte. 10, Plainville, on March 17. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual auction will follow a button lunch break. Coffee and dessert will be served and walk-ins are welcome.

VITA tax assistance
EAST HAMPTON — The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers free tax help for taxpayers with low- to-moderateincome age 60 and older.
Certified volunteers receive training sponsored by AARP and the IRS, and will be at the East Hampton Senior Center again this year to help prepare basic Federal and State tax returns. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, the program also offers free electronic filing (e-filing).
Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper — even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into one’s bank account.
To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Fridays, Feb. 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16 and 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Call East Hampton Senior Center for an appointment at 860-267-4426 or stop in.
Golf for Kids seeks players, sponsors
MIDDLEFIELD — Ädelbrook’s Golf for Kids Tournament will be held on Thursday, May 31 at the Robert Trent Jones Course at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield. In its 23rd year, this tournament brings golfers from all over the state with different business needs and is a perfect opportunity for you to get your company’s name out in the “fore” front. The day includes 18 holes of golf, continental breakfast and afternoon buffet, contests for long drive and closest to the pin, free neck and shoulder massages, silent auction and a prize drawing, as well as other special contests throughout the tournament.
