Chillious serving as interim head coach

- By David Borges

Raphael Chillious is serving as UConn’s interim head coach until further notice, Hearst Media Connecticut has learned.

Chillious just finished his first season as UConn’s associate head coach. He came to UConn from the University of Washington, where he served as Lorenzo Romar’s assistant coach for seven of the prior eight seasons until Romar and his staff were fired after last season.

Chillious replaced Glen Miller, who was fired after UConn went 16-17 last season.

The status of the entire assistant coaching staff, including Chillious, remains up in the air. Typically, assistants have contracts that expire in June. Once UConn hires a new coach, he will likely want to bring in his new staff, though it’s possible he could keep one or two people from the prior regime. Chillious isn’t seen as a likely candidate to take over head coaching duties on a perma-

nent basis.

UConn announced it was beginning the process of terminating the employment of head coach Kevin Ollie on Saturday. Ollie has vowed to fight the decision, and is on paid leave in the interim.
