Killingworth teens tops in their class
HADDAM — The first- and second-ranked students in the Haddam-Killingworth High School Class of 2018 have been announced.
Kelsey D’Amico is the valedictorian and Andrea “Andi” Roman is the salutatorian.
D’Amico is the daughter of John and Lynn D’Amico of Killingworth. She has excelled in a highly demanding schedule, including 27 honors and advanced-level classes, culminating in a 4.32 cumulative weighted grade-point average, according to a news release. She has received numerous awards for her academic and extracurricular achievement, including the Yale Book Award.
She is a leader of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams and captain of cross country during her junior and senior years. She is a highlydecorated runner who holds four school records, culminating in her participation in the New Balance Nationals Meet in 2016, and vice president of the Student Council, treasurer of the French Honor Society, and member of the National Honor Society.
Outside of school, she is an award-winning showman of livestock, vice president of the New Haven and Middlesex County 4-H Extension, and has volunteered at a local nature center, the release continued. D’Amico recently began working at a local veterinarian clinic. She is deciding between colleges and plans to major in animal science with a goal to attend veterinary school.
Roman, daughter of David and Laura Roman of Killingworth, earned a 4.29 GPA while taking 23 honors and advanced-level classes. She is a member of the HKHS National Honor Society as well as the Spanish Honor Society. This is her second year with the Human Relations Club, where she holds a leadership position.
She has been a member of the Student Advisory Board since her freshman year and is a member of the Student Council, has participated on the lacrosse, field hockey and both indoor and outdoor track teams.
Academically, Roman is highly recognized, the release said. She was presented with the HOBY leadership award her sophomore year as well as the Harvard Book Award and the David McCullough award for writing during her junior year. She is and crafting and volunteers at Middlesex Hospital on a regular basis.
Roman plans to major in biomedical engineering in the fall with the hope of attending medical school in the future, according to HKHS.
