Emergency Services Spring Fair, Open House set

-

HADDAM — In honor of National Volunteer Month in April, all local community members are welcome to attend an Emergency Services Spring Fair and Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Open House on Saturday, April 28.

During the event, guests may tour the fire station and various fire apparatus; meet with volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians; watch CPR and Hurst Jaws of Life tool demonstrations; try on firefighter gear; and enjoy free snacks and refreshments. Children can receive a professional photograph of themselves taken in a firetruck. Haddam Ambulance personnel will offer blood pressure screenings, Vial of Life kits, and coloring books to children.

Volunteers from Haddam Fire, HVFC’s Junior Division, Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service, and the HVFC Woman’s Auxiliary will staff information booths. In addition, the Connecticut State Police will attend and offer giveaways.

“We’re hoping residents of the Haddam/Higganum area will stop by and see what our emergency services do for the town, but also, if anyone has an interest in joining one of our organizations, we will be on hand to answer any questions,” said Lt. Tony Lafo, HVFC Membership Committee Chairperson. “We’re always looking for more volunteers.”

HVFC currently has openings for the role of Firefighter, Fire Police and Emergency Medical Service. Prior experience is not required and all training is provided. Firefighter candidates must be 18 or older and have a valid Connecticut driver's license.

The HVFC Junior Division is comprised of 14- to 17-year-old cadets who learn alongside firefighters and perform support functions at calls. Juniors receive training and protective turnout gear. Once a Junior member is 18, he or she has the opportunity to join the regular membership.

Auxiliary members provide emergency support to on-scene firefighters and emergency responders, principally by supplying snacks, meals and beverages. Members plan and execute activities for the company and hold multiple fundraisers each year. Any resident over the age of 18 who resides in the Town of Haddam is eligible for membership. Affiliation with the fire service is not required.

HVAS is seeking volunteers to fill the role of Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician. No experience is needed.

The Spring Fair and HVFC Open House takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at HVFC Station 1, 439 Saybrook Road in Higganum. Members of the First Congregational Church of Haddam and the Higganum Congregational Church will serve popcorn, hotdogs and drinks, and the HVFC Auxiliary will offer baked goods to all fairgoers.
