City high school students to vie in contest at CCSU
Connecticut Geography Challenge features nearly 20 teams
NEW BRITAIN — Middletown will be wellrepresented by students attending the Connecticut Geography Challenge May 22 at Central Connecticut State University.
High school teams from 18 other municipalities — Bethel, Colchester, Danbury, Darien, Fairfield, Falls Village, Lyme-Old Lyme, Manchester, Middletown, Ridgefield, South Windsor, Storrs, and Wethersfield — are competing in the 27th annual event.
This year’s theme is “Disasters: Natural and Human-Made,” according to a press release.
The geography challenge is the only interscholastic geography competition in the state for high school students. It is sponsored by the Connecticut Geographic Alliance, a group of educational institutions and individuals dedicated to promoting geography education in the state of Connecticut.
The challenge requires a high level of geographic knowledge and well-developed geography skills as well as good team work, according to the release.
The competition consists of five team events:
1 A problem-solving activity which requires geographic knowledge and skills to solve a puzzle.
1 A map-reading activity which requires the use of technology and interpretation skills.
1 An orienteering activity to test map reading and compass skills.
1 A GPS activity to test the use and application of geographic knowledge and technology.
1 A geography quiz bowl competition requiring extensive geographic knowledge.
The program is supported by National Geographic Society Education Foundation monies, the release said.
